Undertale:
How many games do you know where a loveable skeleton is datable? No? Well, Understale remains one of the best games ever made. A wholesome and often emotionally profound RPG where nobody needs to die, and friendship can rule.
Hellblade Senua’s Sacrifice:
Hellblade humane depiction of psychosis is disturbing on a level that many horror games can only aspire to. One of the greatest horror games, period.
Disco Elysium:
An RPG where you have to solve puzzles and conversations through talking instead of combat. An excellent Idea well executed with a great story to match.
Witcher 3:
Instead of a shallow ocean, Witcher 3 changed the open-world RPG through the innovative idea of offering heaps, and heaps, and heaps of high-quality content. All wrapped in an epic tale that will never be forgotten.
Bloodborne:
This game introduced me to the Soulsborne genre; it cemented my love and admiration for the gothic and cosmic horror genres and inspired me to write my own stories within said genres.
What Remains of Edith Finch:
What Remains of Edith Finch is set apart by the brilliant inclusion of gameplay more complex than walking. Each minigame ties into the life and death of a Finch family member. Every single one is brilliantly told as well.
System Shock 2:
System Shock 2 might be a little unintuitive sometimes, but that doesn’t stop the game from being a terrifying experience in difficulty and sound design. Also, SHODAN is an excellent villain.
Cuphead:
A great game for a swell battle. Cuphead is brilliant in its art direction, boss design, and gameplay. An actual work of art.
Saints Row 4:
Saints Row 4 is a massive pile of fun, maybe too easy and repetitive in quest design. But all that doesn’t matter when you can wack Shakespeare quoting aliens into orbit with a candy-striped dildo bat.
Dragon Age Origins:
Early Bioware was the best Bioware, Dragon Age Origins isn’t the best looking, but the story and startling in-depth combat make it a highly replayable game.
Honorary Mentions
Stickfight: The Game:
Stickfight: The Game never ceases to make me laugh. The gameplay is simple but endlessly fun, like a real-time slapstick comedy where you can fire snakes at people.
Superhot:
Superhot is the most innovative shooter I have played in years.
The Sexy Brutale:
Think of it as Groundhog day mixed with a murder mystery. The ways one has to prevent people from dying without directly interacting with the other guests is fun and clever, and it is an excellent time for me and everyone.
Divinity Original Sin 2:
An epic tale that puts modern Bioware to shame. Filled with charm, challenge, and intrigue, Laren Studios are some of the best players in the RPG genre for an excellent reason.
Glass Masquerade:
Relaxing, beautiful, and practically flawless in every way. I loved to play this puzzle title while destressing.
Jazz Jackrabbit 2:
Filled with 1990s sass and charm, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 might not be the most brutal platformer, but it is undoubtedly fun.
Rayman Legends:
Rayman Legends is extremely fun and fills me with an intense feeling of joy that few games have offered. I wish Ubisoft would do more games like Rayman Legends instead of the dry sandboxes they produced.
